The day World War Two was declared - September 3rd 1939

Not everybody was listening to the radio on the morning of September 3rd 1939 when Neville Chamberlain announced the declaration of war to the British public.

It was a Sunday and in St Martin’s Church the 11.00am service was being taken by the Reverend Cox.  In the middle of the service an elderly man rushed into the church and whispered to the Vicar what he had just heard on the radio. The Rev. Cox informed the congregation from the pulpit that a state of war now existed between Britain and Germany. He then pronounced the Benediction and ended the service.
